Women with disabilities

Women with disabilities suffer from compounded levels of discrimination. Although they share the same obstacles as other women, they face additional difficulties exercising their rights due to environmental, social, and legal barriers. Among these barriers are limited opportunities in education, employment, and hiring

Physical, sexual, and psychological violence, which can be institutional or interpersonal, impose restrictions on reproductive rights, including the right to motherhood and child-rearing

Article 6 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities stipulates that signatory states must take necessary measures to ensure that women with disabilities enjoy all forms of equality and guarantee their fundamental freedoms. It is incumbent upon states to take measures to ensure the development and advancement of women in order to exercise their fundamental freedoms as per the convention

The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on December 13, 2006, and it entered into force on May 3, 2008. Every year on December 3rd, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Women with disabilities do not receive sufficient assistance in healthcare, education, and social services, and their opportunities for integration into society are lacking. There is a lack of focus in national plans on issues related to women with disabilities

Iraq ratified the convention in 2013, and Law No. 38 for the Care of Persons with Disabilities was issued in 2018. However, the law did not prioritize sufficient attention to women with disabilities but rather addressed persons with disabilities in general without specifically mentioning women.
